In our continuing effort to bring light to small producers, Broadcast purchased this coffee with the help from Benjamin Paz, Relationship Manager at the mill, Beneficio San Vicente, in the Santa Barbara region of Honduras. Broadcast has been purchasing coffee from the BSV mill for several years now. What makes this year different is that we were able to work closely with Benjamin and our importer partner, Atlas, on identifying two small producers for us to start a buying relationship with.

In 2009 Edvin Emmanuel Sabillon inherited a 2.8 hectare plot of land from his father, 1.8 of which grows coffee. Then, in 2011 Edvin started working in a bank, at the same time he studied at university and together with his father and brothers he farmed his plot of land. In 2018 he began to grow specialty coffee, motivated by his friends and neighbors, and has since not stopped and hopes to continue producing high quality coffee for many more years.

Edvin Sabillon faces challenges similar to what others are facing in Honduras, and other coffee growing communities - high rates of emigration means a shrinking labor force, coupled with high agricultural input costs such as soil amendments.  Despite these challenges, Edvin is motivated to continue, and has plans to build a wet mill on his farm, and to plant the remainder of his land with coffee.

After hand-harvesting, the cherries are put into plastic bags for around 48 hours to perform what's called a cherry fermentation; then the cherries are de-pulped, and the parchment is put into bags where it is dry fermented for 24 hours. After, the parchment, with the mucilage in tact, is put inside a parabolic solar dryer for around 20 days. During the drying the parchment is sorted by hand to remove any defective coffee seeds.

I’m not a coffee person, but I was looking for a gift for someone who is a coffee lover. Brewtoria helped me select a gift that was within my price range and which the recipient loved. I’ll be back to Brewtoria for all future coffee needs.
